no easy one, the old servant was much reduced, and came out in
three parts, and each difficult to get hold of, and unwilling to leave
but out they all came and it was a good riddance. I have now
experienced both and can truly say that losing a wife is rather
worse than having a tooth drawn, and this I know receiving letters
from a dear partner in a foreign and hostile land does good like
a medicine. Never did I so deeply feel the truth of »like cold
water to a thirsty soul» etc. I could scarcely help dancing about
all day and singing while I danced. I never doubted your having
written on the 3rd but was delighted to be assured of it by
receiving it along with that of the 10th and the very interesting enclosure.
Nothing could be more comforting to my mind than Bro. Rahmns
noble letter. Mrs. Westdahls is also deeply interesting, I wish you
or Mrs. Sundberg would write her a few lines saying how things
have been & are and that I shall soon write her from hence. But
she is very anxious to have some particulars, you may say if you
like that you forwarded her letter without reading it. If Mr. Erskine
has advanced a little more than I left in his hands to pay Mrs.
Bratt, it shall soon be forwarded along with the larger sum, which
must be sent from this before the 18th June. I feel very
thankful that you have all been preserved in peace and safety, and I
indulge the hope that our darling children are all well. I have not
heard from Robert since I left him at Ann’s, but »no news is good
news», and the fact is I promised to write Ann first, and could not
do it till I heard from you. I wish you would ask Brusewitz what
he would think of occupying our rooms furnished as they are, next
winter, or from the time you would leave if more convenient to him.
If the question of property is long of being settled, it would be
most desirable to have such a friend residing there, and the rent
would be no object on our side, as the benefit of having such a
correspondent in the dwelling would be almost rent enough. Do
talk with him about this, and let me know. But keep it quiet from
Stockholm friends. I feel very grateful to Countess Björnstjerna
and all other friends so kind to you. The Lord will reward them.
Tuesday night I attended the meeting of the Home Missionary
Society where I heard famous speaking, in the forenoon I attended
the B. & F. Temperance Meeting and spoke. Lord Teignmouth
spoke very kindly of myself and work. The venerable Bishop of
Norwich spoke well and warmly. Wednesday morning the London
District Meeting commenced, upwards of 80 preachers are present,
Dr. Bunting in the chair. Dr. Bunting’s luminous, stringent and
yet kindly statements on every topic are very instructive and to me
most useful, as having for so many years heard so little about
Methodism. The preachers are all very kind and many talk of you with
great sympathy and yet I have been made very uneasy. Mr. Beecham
urging me to go to Guernsey & Jersey on a Mission deputation of
