MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

12 days. This I seriously objected to as fatal to the Stockholm
case, and as evidently ludicrous in the sight of both friends & foes
in Sw[eden] that a day should be diverted from this case for any
other purpose when every day is so vastly important. On
Wednesday evening I attended the annual meeting of the London
District Missionay Society. Mr. Farmer ably presided, and Mr.
Thornton, Mr. Lorimer of the Scotch Church, Mr. Barton, Mr. Crofts,
Mr. Jobson, Mr. W. Bunting, Mr. Martin etc. delivered excellent
speeches. I feel convinced that the piety & prayerfulness of our
Missionary secretaries and speakers have been greatly improved, by
a sanctifying blessing on the difficulties with which the Mission cause
has been encumbered. This forenoon only I have been delivered
from Mr. Beecham’s solicitations, by Mr. England agreeing to go.
At another time I should greatly have enjoyed the journey,
especially in such company as that of Barnabas Shaw, but now I could
not go. I think you had as well write me direct through the Post
unless Countess B. can send to Mr. Tottie direct without putting it
in Baron Rehausens bag as I do no get it till 2 P. M. when I
might at 10 either at the Mission house, or at Mr. Tottie’s. But
consult about this, and if there is any reason to fear the Post Office,
it is better to have the letter a few hours later than not at all. I
know not what to say about Edwards, he is to me as
unaccountable as ever, though we live together. He has talked with me about
Miss C. by her expressed desire, but would not allow that anything
on his side beyond mere friendship had taken place. With all
regard for his friendly disposition he does not improve on my mind
and he evidently does not stand high with the secretaries; what
will become of him does not clearly appear. Begin, my love, in
your next letter to put questions as to what is to be done in case
of your having to finish up yourself. By next post something more
decisive may be communicated. Tell Mr. Keyser that there will be
a Bible Committee, and I shall write him the first post day
afterwards. And now love to all in & out of the house who ought to
be remembered by and who remember

Your own

George.

I have been requested by Mr. Wilkinson, a solicitor here, to
make an affidavit to the death of Mr. Smith.
