heller nekas. Kallsinnighet å ena sidan — svärmeri å en annan äro
bedröfliga bevis derpå. Hjerteligen tack imedlertid, älskade Lärare
och Vän! för det myckna goda Du utan att förtröttas af
otacksamheten och lönlösheten har gjort oss arma usla får! Tack ock för
det goda jag genom och af Herr Pastorn särskildt och så
öfverflö-dande har åtnjutit: måtte jag alltid kunna behålla det uti ett
tacksamt hjerta och visa mig detsamma värdig genom ett Evangelio
värdigt lefverne. Tänk ock någon gång uti din presterliga förbön
på en ringa vän och tjenare

To the Rev. Mr. Scott.
Dear Sir,
After I had seen you the first time, I wrote to Germany for
a portrait of Peter Böhler, a man, well known, both among the
Methodists and among the Moravians; when it arrived, you had
already left Sweden. Now I avail myself of the opportunity of your
dear partner following you to England, to send it you as a small
token of respect and as a sign of fellowship in the Lord. There
are many things, my dear Sir, in which we do not agree with each
other, but in one thing, I trust, we do agree, in the intention of
spending our life in the service of the Lord Jesus, who has
redeemed us with his blood, and in the wish of promoting unity of
spirit among all children of God. Taking it for granted, that
according to the words of scripture, »in many things we offend all»
(James 3, 2), I have always endeavoured, through the grace of God,
to learn from all denominations both in doctrine and in practice,
of your denomination, for instance, not to shun the cross, boldly
to stand up for the truth, to work both in season and out of season,
most earnestly to strive after holiness etc. If every denomination
would avail itself of all the christian graces and of all christian
truth, that is to be found among all other denominations, then
we might hope, to form a union all over the church of Christ, the
basis being the tvhole truth, which is now scattered among the
different churches. — No country seems to be so far from such a
union, as Sweden, in which you have been labouring; but I am
sure, the Moravians in former times and you in the latter time,
