ceasing, that by the operation of His Holy Spirit He will take
away all existing hindrances and will guide us to that unity for
which the Founder and Ruler of Church prayed to His heavenly
Father: that they all may be one as we are one.
’We close with the intercession that our Lörd will richly
give His blessing to one and all who labour in sincerity and
in His fear for the establishment of His kingdom among men.’
By such fellowship in the spirit of the Saviour,
misunder-standing can be removed. We draw nearer to the great goal.
We may hold varying opinions about the unity of the Church
and the way to it. But we must all acknowledge that the view
of the chief authority of the Greek Church is right. The pastoral
letter sent out in 1920 by the Ecumenical throne, and
after-wards confirmed with one voice by the weighty Orthodox
delegation at Lausanne, will be memorable in the history of the Church.
It will surely be blessed in the future.
The encyclical published by the Ecumenical Patriarchate
in 1920, by which all the Churches of Christ were summoned
to form a league of Churches and collaborate ön moral and social
questions, cannot be considered as an attempt at reunion in the
direct meaning of the word, but . . . brotherhood and
co-opera-tion is according to the Ecumenical Patriarchate the sacred
means which will prepare and facilitate the complete and blessed
union which may some day be obtained with God’s help.’»
Wenn Pater Pribilla schreibt, dass die orthodoxe Delegation
durch ihre »feierliche Gewandung und Liturgie zum Glänze der
gemeinsamen Gottesdienste und Festlichkeiten» beitrug »und
gerade dadurch den Eindrück» verstärkte, »dass sie für die
Konferenz, die es an Verneigungen und Huldigungen vor den
ehrwürdigen Kirchen des Orients nichts fehlen Hess, tatsächlich mehr
Dekoration war», vergisst er, dass für die Einheitsbestrebungen
ganz besonders auf dem Gebiete der christlichen Liebe und
Gerechtigkeit kein Ereignis unserer Seit bedeutsamer gewesen
ist als eben der Sendbrief des Ökumenischen Patriarchats von
1920 über eine Gemeinschaft der Kirchen zwecks Betätigung
des Geistes Christi in den Nöten der Gegenwart. Wenn er das
Programm durchsieht, wird er auch finden, dass die Orthodoxen
nicht nur an dem bei weitem wichtigsten Teil unserer Zusammen-
