Letters and Documents written by John Durie
1636—1638.

To William Laud.1
(The Hague, J| April 1636.)

Most Reuerend Father in God,

After y:t I hadde beene of låte at the Synod of the French
Churches convocated out of all these Prouinces in the Citie of
Vtrecht; where a whole day beeing sette a part to scanne thoroughly
my proposition; & the whole assembly hauing gotten satisfaction
upon all their questions concerning the worke; I was dismissed;
with an Answer according to which this Act was afterward conceiued
& giuen to me. Wherupon beeing encouraged to proceed; I was
about to take a course to cause the article of the last Synod of
South-holland to bee altered: but whiles I am in those thoughts;
behold a thing unexpected doth fall out; for by letters out of Sweden
written by one y:t is in a place of publick employment in that state,
I am called upon & earnestly entreated to make a iourney
thitherward; that the opportunitye of a Dyet w:ch is to meet at Stock-holm
about the latter end of May next, might bee taken; In which 1 am
promised to receiue great helpe & furtherance to my worke. The
warning is come somew[ha]t låte; therefore I am entreated to take
the more speedie resolution & make the greater haste in the way,
lest so great an opportunity offered by a speciall prouidence of God,
might passe without yeelding aduantage to so good a cause. W:ch
because I am enclined to doe, as not knowing any reason to
dissuade me; I thought it my duetie hauing told Sr. Will: Boswell
of the Circumstances of the matter, to acquaint your Grace with
my purpose, that with your permission & foreknowledge I may bee
able to trye what successe God will giue in those quarters, where I
did not expect to haue hadde so speedie entrance. & if any thing
of any moment aswell in other affaires as in this fall out worth
your Grace his knowledge; 1 shall not neglect my duetie in giuing
notice whiles I am there; & whatsoeuer the euent of my iourney
shall bee, in due tyrne, I shall giue a true account: in the meane
season I take my leaue; &: commending yow to the blessing of
almighty God, I rest
Yowr Grace his

Most humble & duetifull Seruant in Christ
From the Hage |j April 1636. John Durye.
