MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN

To [Samuel Hartlib].1

(Norrköping, -J| May 1636.)

From Norcoping in Sweden the |f of May 1636.

Deare freind,

Theis serve to give you advertizements that I wrote from
Hamburg to you on the 27th of Aprill & that now I am advanced safely
thus farr further. 1 haue nothing to add to my former memorialls,
but that you would be instant towards God for mee in your prayers
that theis endeavours may be effectuall to his glory & that I may
be made an Instrum[en]t fit for his service. I apprehend difficulties,
although I haue hope to doe good therefore I would haue you not
to make too much noise of my going into Sweden, nor to speake
much of the hopes & encouragem[enjts w:ch I haue gotten, but to
let the more trusty freindes know of my departure only vppon a
speciall invitation & a likelihood to further the worke at the dyet
of that kingdome, and that from thence there is hope to get a rise
to proceed in Germany.

I am now come to Norcoping, where the man that sent for
mee is resident. With him I haue stayed theis 6. or 7. daies &
intend with the first to goe for Stockholme. I haue past the iorney
on his charges hitherto & in it haue spent 130 rix dollers since
my departure from Amsterdam. As for my further maintenance I
haue not as yet spoken with him, neither can I be forward to doe
it, I will expect what God will doe by him. In the meane tyrne
wee agree in the manner of carying the buisines here that I should
agitate in my Theologicall way and that he should worke in the
way of policy; Neither shall I appeare to haue anie neere relacon
to him but onely be togeather as good aquaintance. His name is
Lovijs de Geere, which I would haue you to keepe to your self,
for certeine reasons, because of some relations of State vnder w:ch
he standeth. He is a paterne of liberality, he maynteyns 8.
Schol-lers in the University, sends guifts by 2000. rix dollers at once, and
that very often to our distressed breathren in Germany, and yet he
hath well neare a dozen of Children, and none of them marryed,
yet sonnes & daughters.

As for his scope in calling mee, it is mixed somwhat for loue
of my worke it self, somwhat for hope of benefit to his particular
affaires, for you must know that he is a great man in theis parts &
in a manner a Lord over all the Minerall trades for Cannon &
Copper workes, which in the life of the King he vndertooke to
mannage for the good of this Realme, and to this effect he planted
many Townes of this Kingdome with strangers, and is a Lord of
a great Territory where he setteth strangers a worke for all sorts of
