WESTIN, BREV FRÅN JOHN DURIE

2 o i

Manufactures cheifely in Iron and Copper, & indeed is the head of
the plantacon of strangers in theis quarters, & this Crowne hath
made vse of him to that effecte that forraigners might be brought
hither to populate the Country, & to raise vpp the trades and
Mechanicall Workes which in other places are in vse. Now soe it
is, that he hath brought the matter to a great perfection, and is
willing (because he is a godly & zealous man for religion) to
procure for his subiects freedome of Conscience, that yf it be possible
he may mainteine vnto them preachers of the reformed religion for
the edification of their soules. He doth furnish them with
Schoolmasters to teach their Children and to read prayers and a Homily
on the Lordes day, but he findeth not that to bee ynough.
Therefore he would procure more vnto them yf possibly it may be
effected with publicke permission from the State here. To this effect
he hath sent for mee, that I should assist him in the way of my
negotiation, which I haue promised to doe, soe farre as it
concer-neth the matter of Divinity or anie treaty with Divines. To which
I onely will oblige my self, but he would faine fasten vppon mee
a more politique way of negotiating, as supposing mee to haue some
other politique respects to the State and great ones of England then
I haue, but from this error I haue laboured to free his mind, and
given him a true information of the vniversality, spirituality,
independency, and whole nature of my endeavours, which I see he is
capeable to conceive aright, but how effectually it doth rellish him
I cannot as yet apprehend. He is a wise and quiet man, perhaps
it wilbe a meanes (for I am perswaded of his true & godly
disposi-con) to season his heart with some other principles then hitherto he
hath conceived and set him vppon more vniversall intentions.

It seemeth by some speeches of his, that he would engage mee
to depend wholly vppon him, for when I told him of my Patron
Sir Thomas in England, who had many waies assisted mee, he
seemed to desire mee to lay downe the thoughts of all other patronage
from henceforth. But I know not whether this bee expedient to be
done, and therefore I am loth to give him occasion to thinke that
I am willing to depend onely vppon him and leave all others, least
yf either I should doe soe, he might take advantage to make
another vse of mee, then I intend to bee ymployed vnto by him:
for I will not be drawne out of that publique & vniversall
spheare for noe mans pleasure. And therefore that I may be
able to stand at a true distance with him & not seeme to depend
wholly vppon him alone, I desire that you would make over
some moneys to mee here, least want of meanes comming from home
make mee too farr obliged to him, or him to presume too farr
vppon mee, for I would haue him to see, that I doe not desire to
be rich from him, or to haue temporall mainetenance of him, but
that 1 seeke truly the advancem[enlt of the Gospell, to which yf he
