WESTIN, BREV FRÅN JOHN DURIE

2 IQ

ed that hee is become since hee hath seene Holland a quite other
man, then formerly hee was in matter of affection to those of our
religion. My Patron here who is great with him hath assured mee
of this. I haue spoken also with the P. Palatine that is not farre
from this place concerninge my worke, he will worke for it all that
hee can, for hee is professedly of cur religion; hee is married to
the Kings sister & his children are the next to the crowne if the
designed Queen should dye.

It is a strange prouidence of god that hath brought me hither;
therefore I am perswaded some speciall good will bee done, and
although the Patron that here offreth himself is a uery honest man,
yet I would not willingly seeme to depend vpon him alone
altogether for meanes least hee might seeke some oth[e]r aduantage
ouer mee, if I should bee too farre obliged to him in that kind.
Therefore what euer you can send let it bee made ouer. I pray
write in the behalf of my worke to the Lord Channcell[ou]r. It
may doe good to put him in mynd of his old resolution, w:ch hee
tooke with you in Prussia.

[John Durie].

To [Thomas Roe].1
(Stockholm, io July 1636.)

Stockholme the 10. of July [1636].

I haue learned somewhat of the publique affaires here, and
seinge I am entringe in action, I will giue you an account. This
meetinge was called for some extraordinary causes, both
Ecclesia-sticall and Ciuill, it was onely of choice p[er]sons viz. the cheif
gou[er]nors of Prouinces and the cheif Bishops. The end in
gene-rall was to consult aboute the establishinge of the orders which the
K. Gustauus had p[re]scribed in his last will. The particulars are
kept secret yet this much I haue learned that they are to erect and
institute some schooles for the education of youth in seuerall places,
y:t they are consultinge aboute new Ecclesiasticall constitutions and
amongst other things aboute the erectinge of a consistory or Court
Ecclesiasticall, which they entend should bee like the Ecclesiasticall
Senate of the Palatinate.

As for mee I am resolued to stay here till the next springe.
For I haue great hopes to gaine aduantage to my cause; For the
administrators of the state are very well enclyned and seeme but
to seeke a good occasion to take away the schisme, I find it by
their owne expressions and by the report of those that know them
better then I doe yet, & by the p[ar]ticulars of some proceedings
w:ch they vse towards the Clergie. I haue not done any thing yet
