MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
in a publicke way of solicitacon but am p[rejparinge the way in
priuate wherein I am come soe färre that ye Channc: Brother hath
promised to cause mee speake with two of the cheif Bishops in his
pjre]sence to conferre vpon the matter, and to discouer their
incly-nations towards the worke. If I find them pliable to good
resolu-cons I will endeauor to take a rise from hence towards all the rest
of the Lutheran Church and states, to bring them on soe, to a
settled consultacon about the busines, wherein this state may bee
a leader to the rest of the Lutherans, at least to such as are not
turned from ye Protestant cause to ye Emperor.
Thus you see how farre I am come; when ye Channc: is
ar-riued ye meeting will be renewed: wherein at this tyrne besides
other matters of peace and warre, whereof there hath been
consul-tacons, there hath also beene deliberated concerninge ye
conty-nuance of the league with Frannce, but what is concluded in y:t &
other things is unknowne, because all that were p[ar]takers of those
consultacons are bound by oath to secresy. It seemes that the
Changes of gouernem[en]t, w:ch are to bee brought in, will tend to
a Republican forme of State. This is all that I haue to say of the
publique.
As for my priuate I long mightily to heare from you, and to
know what is thought of my iourney hitherward, or wherein I can
be seruiceable to you; as I came hither by gods prouidence being
called beyond my intention, so I entend to stay so long till his
prouidence call mee backe againe from hence and shew mee a way
to profit the cause more elsewhere then here, I shall be able to
doe; If this fall out nothinge shall keepe mee here, but if it fall
not out, nothing shall draw mee from hence. For if 1 can settle a
way of correspondency from hence to all other quarters, where I
ought to contynue the consultacon of this matter I care not how long
I stay here, For there is no priuate thinge that shall euer commannd
mee, neither shall any hope of ease or p[re]ferrm[en]t euer draw mee
from ye dangers and paines y:t may attend this worke. And although
want of outw[ar]d meanes may seize vpon mee, yet I hope that hee that
feedeth the young rauens will not suffer mee to famish onely my cheif
care is to haue some supported in England to be able to act there
with such as are willinge to assist mee in the way of sound diuinitie,
For when all is come to all, it will be neither greatnes nor
authority, nor state, nor policie, but sound diuinitie that will doe the
turne, & to gaine ye Judgements of the soundest diuines & ablest
men there must be some Agent y:t is vnpartiall, zealous and
fayth-full to the worke, free from eartly mindednes & respect of p[er]sons
such as will readily serue the Comunion of Saints.
This enclosed I entreate you to addresse if you thinke good.
I haue noe ambition nor expectation, but to depend vpon ye
prouidence of him, y:t hath led mee in a strange course since my youth,
