westin, brev från john durie

all that I haue at any tyrne wished to set a worke. Now let vs
wait vpon god.

I pray you learne what euer you can concerninge plantations,
For it is a materiall thinge to be taken notice of in respect of these
parts. I purpose to write at large to you & to Sr Tho[mas] shortly
with a shipp, I pray be earnest with him to further our expectations
in England, & bee carefull to confirme the other freinds w:ch you
knowe.

Mr Morian his way to propagate Christianitie is by Russia:
God hath made y:t Emperor capable of good instruccon by the
meanes of diuers counselbs about him & of his owne inclynation
towards protestants, in so much y:t hee hath hired some to
translate vnto him Luthers workes. But ye misery of men is y:t they
[who] haue got large pensions & are called to propagate ye gospell
Hue in pleasure as epicureans. This was Mr Morian his complaint,
& because hee is likely to bee employed towards those quarters from
this Crowne in the way of trade he said his principall ayme would
bee, to see if hee could procure from the Emperor liberty to haue
a schoole erected in some frontiers there where they [= the] long
looked for society might be settled in some safe place, to be a seed
of learninge to conuert y:t nation from sup[er]stition; hee made the
matter probable to take effect with many circumstances, but
especially one w:ch is ye negotiation with a certaine company of
mar-chants vnder ye p[ro]tection of ye D[uke] of Holstein, [which] doe
begin to frame towards ye East Indies by land through Muscouia;
Now where trade beginneth & commerce with forraine nations, there
all other things may be aduanced. Now ye Isle once heretofore
named & yet designed for a place of retreate to ye society is called
Rhunen not farre from Riga, it belongeth to ye L. Admirall of this
crowne a most honest man, & godly. Dr Hein hath spoken to mee
of it now, when hee went last from hence towards Holstein to try
what assistance might be had from y:t Duke in ye cause. Viz.
whether or no a safe residence could not be obtayned from him for
such as would draw themselues together; I would faine write vnto
your quarters, but I know not what effect it will take, I feare men
y:t are too fearefull, true loue & faith doth cast out feare, ye Lord
direct vs & assist vs. Let vs bee busy while wee haue tyrne, ye dayes
are euill therefore ye tyrne must be ye more redeemed. God is
allsufficient, let vs trust in his prouidence. Pray with mee that I
may be here deliuered from vnreasonable men. The grace of the
almighty be with you.

[John Durie].
