To William Laud?
(Stockholm, 6 Dec_ 1636.)
Most Reuerend Father in God,
I haue gotten assurance from the L:d Chancellour that there
will bee a meeting of some choise Divines called together after
Christmas holy dayes: the Choosing of an Archbishop & the
ordering of some ecclesiasticall matters is the cause why they are to
bee called together: my businesse will also come into some
consideration: but I shall desire y:t it may not bee referred to the
consideration of all at first; only y:t some few may bee appointed to
deale with me in it. Y:t the rest (if need bee) beeing informed by
them, & disposed towards the resolution & course wherin wee shall
agree, some public act may bee made & some undertaking from
hence may follow therupon. I find the L:d Chancelour well affected,
but exceeding warye, as good reason hee should bee, in a matter
of such importance; & so ticklish to bee medled with in this
Church.
Hauing understood by Sir Tho. Rowe his letter yowr Grace
his favourable inclination towards my meane endevours; & good
acceptance of the informations w:ch heretofore I sent him,
concerning my intention here, to let some of the Clergie & states men,
y:t consult about a Court Ecclesiasticall, know the Constitution of
the High Commission Court of the Church of England; I haue made
bold to offer to the L:d Chancelour the information w:ch hee doth
testifie, yowr Grace is willing to send ouer to me upon y:t subiect:
his excellence did expresse a singular desire to receiue it
authentically, as a thing w:ch might prooue usefull in these deliberations.
Therefore I am bound to thank yowr Grace for this unexpected
favour. I dare not presume to promise any thing of the issue of
matters: but of the passages of all matters & of my proceedings I
shall giue from tyrne to tyrne God willing a faithfull account. Neither
doe I desire to go out of my priuat way: for I am not fitt to act
any other way but this: my thoughts are too large to bee limitated,
& the nature of the worke in my apprehension cannot well admit
as yet a commission. If any messenger of state (as Sir Tho[mas]
in his letter to me intimateth may fall out) bee sent hither; I think
it would bee best to send with him those thinges w:ch yowr Grace
is willing to communicate: for by shipping the conveyance is
uncertain ; & by poste thinges, beeing of any bulke, so farre offe, will
bee to me chargeable. Thus I take my leaue & rest
