westin, brev från john durie

229

As for the Divines of Vbsall in my former treaties with them,
they were brought not only to declare a willingnesse towards the
worke, but also to declare their agreement in this, y:t a fundamentall
Confession of Faith, & some common Ecclesiasticall constitutions
were the only true meanes of reconcilement: to procure w:ch they
shewed themselues to bee more willing to ioyne in treatie with the
Churches of Great Brittaine then with any others; as in my former
letters I haue mentioned to yowr Grace. Now if the Counsell of
state by the L:d Chancelour his meanes appoint me to treat further
with those of Vbsall; I purpose to moue them, to deale with the
rest of the Clergie, w:ch will meet the next moneth, either here or
at Vbsall, to this effect that their consent may bee hadde, to the
declaration w:ch alreddie they haue made; w:ch beeing done a further
course of proceeding may be thought upon as the circumstances of
the treatie will yeeld: wherin I can as yet foresee nothing clearly;
& therefore dare not make any coniecture, or setled resolution; only
this I think will bee safe to doe & usefull to aduance the worke;
y:t if they will shew a desire to treat further upon the two
fore-named heades rather with us then others; & if it can bee brought
to passe y:t of this a publick act may bee made: then I will
undertake to bee a meanes for them, to informe yowr Grace & the
Vni-uersities of their resolution; giuing them hope, y:t so good a motion
to treat upon such a Subiect will bee gladly entertained.

Further then this I shall not dare to presume, in the outward
way of carying the worke, except I haue particular direction, w:ch
as yet I can not desire, because the ground whence it must rise is
not laid sufficiently. Thus I take my leaue, commending all to the
Prouidence & Direction of allmightye God, in whom I rest Yowr
Grace his

Most humble & obedient Seruant at command

John Durye.
