most for the mayne thinges in my owne sphere; your councell
concerning a fundamentali confession I doe Intend to follow, neither
would I have you to thinke y:t I am gone from any of my first
grounds, but 1 intend god willing to lay these grounds deeper &
more fundamentally then before, y:t the liberty of severall churches
in matters of Indifferencie & obscuritie in misteries & of
inter-pretacons of severall places of scripture may remayne salva charitate
fraterna, for except wee keepe this wee shall never find rest, for it
is Impossible to thinke y:t all mens minds can bee moulded in all
p[arjticulars after our fashion, but y:t w:ch I intend is to assure us
of this very latitude of Judgement & inocent diversitie without
scandall, & to lay a fundamentali ground of vndoubted truthes for
it, w:ch all side[s] will receive & acknowledge readily, after w:ch a
deliberacon may bee Instituted how to regulate things in the way
of publique Correspondency least scandalls & offences & new
disputes arise in future tymes. But what if these men will not bee
content with the generalities of doctrine w:ch I may propose, what if
they will frame a p[ar]ticular Confession for themselves besides the
forme of agreemjen]t w:ch may bee allowed by all sides for the
generall, what if they wilbe seene also in the worke in there owne
way etc. I must labour to keepe all inconveniences soe farre as I
can, & I hope if the way w:ch I have de[s]cribed take effect y:t
wee shall fall vpon none of these Inconveniences or if they should
offer themselves to bee able to represse them in due tyrne.
I begin heere to gett credit for mony but I dare not make vse
of it above the likelyhood y:t I have to bee able to pay it back
agayne when I have borrowed any sume; I am loath to depend
vpon strangers too much, & if I bee forced it wilbe a greate
hinderance to the freedome of my spirit in p[ro]ceeding: I come
insensibly vnder some publique relacons & am more & more taken
notice of, if therefore I have nothing to mayntayne my selfe in some
fashion or to travill vp & downe as necessity shall require both I
& the worke shalbe disesteemed for it. Therefore I leave to your
generous & prudent consideracon, I cannot open my mouth to any
body else in this, I am much behoulding to you for the care you
have had of mee hitherto both for mayntenance & for the
recom-mendacon of my worke. I beseech you to continue soe long as you
shall find mee walke vprightly w:ch I am resolved to doe to the
end without wavering; after y:t I shall have done with the devines
heere p[er]haps it shalbe fitt for mee to withdraw my selfe a while
out of the Crowd & sit downe in private to ripen some Treaties &
Narratives w:ch might fly abroad & the fruite of all might bee
considered & afterwards a new rise might bee taken, for I am
resolved to have (if god will p[er]mit) some retirednes after y:t I shall
have done with this part of the worke w:ch is now in hand.
