& meanes of Pacification. The L:d Archbishop of Vpsal did
be-ginne; & others of the Prelates & Divines euery one as his mind
gaue him proposed y:t which they thought fitting. The Chief straine
of their quaestions in the fore noone was concerning matters of
Doctrine; wherin they would bee satisfied in the particular tenets of
the Churches; this was the drift of the Bishop of Westerose (of
whom I wrote formerly to yowr Grace) to engage me into some
dispute: but I satisfied their demandes without giuing them any
occasion of contradiction: till at last, I hauing openly declined the
authoritie to bee a public interpreter of all the Churches meanings,
& offering to produce all the public confessions (if needes they
would iudge of particular tenets) of the Churches, the nature of our
Conference was somewhat altered, & brought from a Theoreticall
declaration of Doctrines, to a Practicall Consultation about the meanes
of Reconcilement. & because I did know before hand; y:t some
of the Chief would urge a Common & fundamentall Confession;
therefore I hadde this proposition adioned in reddinesse, to giue
them matter to resolue some what of that subiect; wherof heretofore
they used to discourse much but did determine nothing: so hauing
giuen it unto them; they were desirous in the afternoone to see the
Harmonie of Confessions; & to haue a tryall of a kind of plaine
Scripturall Analysis, wherof I make mention there. In the
consideration of those two, almost the whole afternoon was spent; for
they would not bee brought to any particular deliberation; to declare
themselues concerning the way & meanes of prosecuting the worke
in publ ic; but at all occasions tell upon particular matters of
Doctrine.

At last I desired them to depute some with whom matters
belonging more neerely to my Scope might bee handled more
distinctly & punctually; but this they tooke in Consideration till the
next day: so when I met with them the next morning: they declared
their resolution; testifying a loue to the worke and an approbation
of my industrie, y:t professed a willingness in due tyrne to concurre
in it, chiefly if a fundamental confession were offered, wherin all
sides should agree in the truth they would be reddie to declare
themselues consenting to it. Afterward in their Consultation together
with the L:ds Regents to whom they were called to giue a Declaration
concerning our Conference; I haue learned first from the Queenes
Tutor & now two or three dayes ago from the L:d Chancelour
himself y:t they Declared; y:t with me they could come to no
Conclusion because I did keep of[f] from the particulars of Doctrine &
because I was but a priuat person not instructed & authorized to
treat with them definitiuely in this matter: therefore they referred
the matter to the L:ds Regents to giue me an Answer as they
should think expedient. When I spoke last to the L:d Chancelour
hee intimated to me; y:t hee would Consult with his Colleagues
