Churches did not hold soe as I declared: I answered yea: but yet
neuer the lesse I would not haue them to take my wordes as spoken
in all their names: for (said I) their opinions in particular doctrines
are to bee vnderstood Authentically only from the publicke
confessions of w:ch I was not mad[e] a publicke interpreter: att this:one
or two of the bishops would haue ingaged mee under this respect:
but I protested agaynst it: & offering to produce the publicke
confessions as they w[ere sett forth 50 & odde yeares agoe I told them
that my scope was not to sollicite immeadiately a full & p[re]cise
determinacon of all points of doctrine, but rather to sollicite a
Communication of Theologicall Councells for peace & vnitie betwixt th[e]
churches: that the meanes of agreement might bee found out by
com[m]on consent as well in doctrine as in other matters; soe farre
as might tend to publick edificac.on; this matter was agitated a long
while betwixt us, whiles they seemed to draw the matter to a meere
doctrynall conference; & I openly declyned that as a thing not
answerable to my scope or fitt to gayne peacable inclinations: but
rather a meanes to breed some disputations betwixt us: w:ch I
studyed professedly to auoide till a way of decyding doubts &
com-posiirge troublesome controuersies might bee agree[d] vpon: by w:ch
all sides should bee willing to submitt: with much a doe I gayned
them att last to this scope; and then wee begune to speake of the
different confessions of the Churches; & of the differences of
opinions how the[y] might bee reconsiled, if it were found absolutely
necessarye to determyne all doubtfull matters in diuinitie, but they
yeilded that that was not necessarye; neuerthelesse to auoide
occasions of diuisions they thought it not vnprofitable to bee thought
vpon how it might bee brought to passe: & because I did
conjecture before I came to the meeting that some would perhapps insist
vpon this matter, therefore I did prepare before I cam[e] thether
this adioyned proposition: to settle them vpon some determinate
way of resolution: or att least to lett them see that a way might
bee found out if men would bee peacable: soe wee had a good
deale of discourse concerning a fundamentall confession & concerning
the way of Analysis of the holy scriptures: when the foore noone
was spent before wee went a way, they consulted a part, I being
gone out, what was further to bee done: & after they had called
mee in agayne they desired mee to come agayne in the afternoone
& bring a long with mee the booke w:ch contayned all the
con-fesssions of the Churches: & also to shew them in write: a tryall
of the method of Analysing the scripture, demonstratiuely in
resolu-ing some place of scripture concerning the Lords supper: this I
did in the after noone: w:ch was wholly spent in the consideration
of these two things: yett I laboured to bring them to a consultation
& some resolution aboute the way of prosecuting the worke publickly
as well amongst themselues as towards others but they kept that
