westin, brev från john durie

2 55

sure that I could haue obtayned at this meeting a greate deale more
advantage then I haue gotte[n] to the cause: for hee diuerted their
intention from the way of consultation to intend the particular
poynte of doctrine; & in the Conference, I found that hee sough[t]
by diuers meanes to bring mee to some dispute or other but I was
wise enough for him in that respect: yet such a man in soe difficult
a business as this, is able to clogg it more then can bee expressed;
if it bee not moderate[d] vnblamably & constantly prosecuted: I
vnderstand that from hence forth hee will not bee called any more
to such meetings; for almost in euery thing hee is crose to all
resolutions that proceed not from hymselfe. Thus you see how
farre I am come & where the stoppe doth ly; in effect there is
none other exception but that I want a Comission; but as for mee
I doe not desire it till I know what the L:ds will resolue & how
farre they will proceede in the publicke way of the worke, for
except they will seriously resolue to promote the worke, the Clergie
will not doe much of themselues, because such as are willinge to
Coop[er]ate dare not doe it freely for feare to incurre the Jeallousie
of the rest: neither would I bee willing to giue them any occasion
of strife or diuision amongst themselues for that would neither bee
Comendable in mee: nor advantagious to my worke.

As for my priuate affaires I wrote by the last post: I know
not as yett what I should resolue concerning my staying here or
goeing a way: I suppose the resolution w:ch the Lords will giue,
will cleare my doubt. In the meane tyrne I leaue to your prudence
to consider, whether or no (seeing the devines here make a stoppe
only because I haue no authorization) I might not sue for some
Credities to make an ouerture of these treaties, & how they might
bee made publicke; but of this heare after when I learne more of
the L:d Chancellour his mind.

[John Durie].

(Stockholm, 12 August 1637.)

Stockholme, i2:th of August [1637].

I hope all goeth well with you and with all other freinds in
those quarters. As for mee I haue found some aduersary that
laboureth to stopp my proceedings without Rime or reason by meere
violence of passion and Raylinge; In ye meetinge hee laboured by
all meanes to bringe mee to some endlesse dispute, and to diuert
the rest from the resolution which was fauourable towards my cause,
yet hee could not altogether effect his purpose, for I would not bee
brought to a needlesse contestation, and the assembly did giue mee
