westin, brev från john durie

gaine my purpose here I purpose to set a part some tyrne and
renewe my Pædagogicall and pansoficall Notions and then I will
endeauour to satisfie all your desires. I neuer heard before of
Sorellus, and I reioyce that god doth make on all sides mens
spirits to concurre; In the papers which I sent you heretofore, I thinke
it not amisse that you leaue out that which you thinke may bee
euill taken by any in any of my writinges which you communicate
in priuate; let not the good bee spoyled for that which may bee
taken euill.

I am glad of your acquaintance, with the Danish-Gentleman,
I haue also gotten acquaintance with the Danish Agent that liueth
here, who of himself was very earnest to seeke for it diuers tymes
by others. Hee maketh mee very fayre promises and inviteth mee
to their quarters. But I made my negotiacon slight and meane to
him. Onely I told him the true intent of it, and the Theologicall
way of proceedinge, wherein hee seemed to receiue satisfaccon and
promised to acquaint the Lord Channcelkr Frise with it; hee told
mee y:t their great Doctor would not bee soe much auerse from the
scope as some men might p[er]haps thinke; when I obiected that
hee had written de fundamentali dissensu against vs hee said that
that was rather to free himselfe from the Jealousie and aspersion
of Calvinisme that was stirrd vp against him, then for any great hatred
against vs. For hauinge trauelled into Holland and England when
hee came home hee was suspected of Calvinisme, and soe was
forced to purge himselfe that way. If this bee one it is to mee
no good token of the mans Conscience; It sheweth that hee will
neuer goe further or doe more then the world will suffer him, and
that all will bee for politick ends which hee will doe. This Agent
told mee also of my Lord Rosencrantz very much good and said
amongst other things that hee was about to put forth a booke which
would tend to this effect. As for the vniversity of Marpurg if it
hath written any thinge against my worke I conceiue it can bee
nothinge but a railinge accusation and I hope will doe mee no
harme, if I can come to see it.

Concerninge my stayinge here or goeing[e] from hence I am
as yet not fully resolued, yet my mynd doth enclyne after a
while to goe. But I feare that I shall not bee able to stirre this
winter till the springe by reason of the B[isho]pp of Westerose. If
I had mony to spare it would come well to passe eyther to cause
print some things whereby to engage and drawe on this Church
more powerfully vpon the worke or else to bee in readines if I
should retire for Denmarke or for both, for in effect the one or the
other will bee requisite. I pray you thinke vpon it. And I
purpose to write God willinge effectually to Sr Thomas to shewe him
how necessary it is that I should bee mayntained for this winter
here to ouercome the Rubbes that are cast in agains[t] the worke
