ad Scandalorum tam Civilium quam Ecclesiasticorum causas in
publico statu Divino iure auerruncandas atque præueniendas; ut ex eo
tam Ecclesiæ in com[m]unione sanctorum, quam civili statui in publica
tranquillitate sua constet incolumitas. Eam ut Deus Opt: Max: in
florenti hac rerum Euangelicarum administratione Vestra largiri
dig-netur gubernationi, atque statui huic Vestro tam Civili quam
Eccle-siastico perpetuam. Ego precibus apud eum assiduis intercedere non
desistam; prout decet ilium qui puro corde, pro fauore in hac causa
hactenus accepto, gratitudinem animi sui ubique testabitur, &: eo
nomine futurus est in seculum

Stockholme 31. Septemb [er] [1637].

If neede were I could write a large discourse tending to
satisfy the greate doubts w:ch is taken vp as you say by the better
sort ag[ains]t my worke. I am sure that if they will but doe theire
duty in a spirituall way & not be[t]ray themselues & theire owne
cause & the liberty wherein Christ hath set vs for the keeping of
a good Conscience in publique, honest & vnblameable endeavours
that there is noe way in the world more likely to free them from
all theire feares then the proceeding of this work w:ch I haue in
hand. Therefore I pray you as you love the publique good be not
p[re]possessed with needles feares & suffer not your heart to waver,
be stedfast in well doeing & doe that w:ch is vprigt openly & leave
to God the Issue.

As for me; rest Confident I shall sooner dye then give way
to the least thing w:ch may prejudg[e] the publique good. I haue
received the inclosed paper of worthy Mr. Meade wherein he doth
shew his judgment concerning my Consultation of fundamentals; I
agree fully to his concell for my part in framing a symbolicall
confession vpon the foundation of the ancients but how shall we
bring this about that others wilbe Content with that symplicity
wherein he & I would rest. I am driven in my thoughts to find
out wayes w:ch may take off all theire p[re]tence & shifts & also
wxh may not only suffice the Com [m]on state of the churches but
oblige the more scrupulous divines to acquiesce & not to dispute
about needelesse matters. And to speake truth, if we respect the
