meddelanden och aktstycken

publique state of Protestants in regard of Papists there is noe
Coun-cell to be given better then that w:ch mr. Meade doth give, but by
what meanes shall mens Judgments be setled in others disputes to
w:ch these generall determinations will hardly reach.

I haue much to say & write of this matter, but now I cannot
enlarge because my heart is straightned full of other difficulties &
overwhelmed with sorrowful] app[re]hensions arrising both here &
elswhere. The causes you have vnderstood in my former letters &
now I can hardly resolve with my selfe what to doe; to enter in
strife with the B[isho]pp of Westerose is to leave my scope, & not
to resist his violence & Injuries done to my worke is to abandone
the cause; to move the Magestrates here to Interpose theire
authority ag[ains]t theire clergy is an attempt that wilbe in vaine because
they stand in awe of them & they feare that they will become
tumultuous, & I am loath that for any endeavours of mine, occasion
of discontent should arrise, betwixt the Magestrate & the
Ecclesi-asticall State, Soe I haue none other Course but to runne to God
& to waite in pacience what will become of all my solicitations and
p[ro]vocations & what the Magestrate will doe of his owne accord,
for I am of your Judgment that except the Magestrate will take the
worke on all sides in hand there is nothing to be done, but againe
alas, theire ayme is onely at the outward. Soe worldly men are
all for outward busines & goe to force matters in a violent way;
& wee being wholy set in a spirituall way we never can meete nor
find any true assistance from them. And then because also your
ayme & mine is soe vniversall & truly Impartiall, none of those that
are otherwise sensible of spirituall duties come really in to vs
because they would haue every thing done vnder some p[ar]ticular
respect of theire owne w:ch is not alwayes answerable to the
gen[er]all good of publique Edification. Now for vs to stepp lower
& side with this or that party would be out of our way soe I see
noe better course then to waite in pacience & pray for some
deliverance in due tyrne, yet still doeing our endeavours soe farre as
it shall please God to enable vs.

I am not well both in body & mind therefore I write of all
matters Imperfectly & with broken thoughts for the p[re]sent till God
endue me with more strength in both & let me see what resolution
I should take. As yet I can make none other but to stay here
therefore what ever you get let it be made over vnto me by way
of Exchange. If I get meanes I would faine print something here
vpon my Charges that I may be able to Confound the malice &
lying tongues of those of Westerose & Cause that w:ch they labour
by all meanes to suppresse breake forth the more apparantly that
all men may take notice of it. Thus I rest desiring you to
remember me in your prayers & to all freinds, neither be you
discouraged at my affliction at this tyrne for I hope it will take at
