westin, brev från john durie

mee, that it would tend to a further alienation of their spirits, if
they should receiue my excuse. Therefore I haue not sent it vnto
them, for I found the Lord Channcellour somewhat troubled at it &
in a suspition as if I did entend to bring a publique reproach vpon
their Clergie, but I haue giuen him assurance of my innocent
intentions although I haue been highly wronged, by the B[isho]ps. I
meane when those that put forth the Censure, went from hence,
they desired the Lords Regents to giue mee some dispatch,
Intima-tinge a feare that I might giue occasion of some scandall; Soe I
expect what resolution the Lord Channcellour will take, & what
dispatch they will giue. I find him not auerse, to haue a
conty-nuance of the negotiacon by way of correspondency, but yet I doe
suspect him by reason of that matter of state w:ch was motioned
by mr B: & I feare the Jealousie of that will doe no good.

I am aboute to write a letter of farewell to those of Vpsall in
stead of the former excuses, wherein I will salue vp all the matters,
& leaue them with a good impression, vpon w:ch 1 hope the Lord
Channcell[ou]r will build in due tyrne a further worke when I am
gone, cheifely if hee findeth some concurrence in other matters and
can bee able to appease the turbulent humour of him of Westerose.
I finde that forrayne Rumors both of Germany and Scotland make
him more si owe then hee is by nature & the feare of drawing a
Jealousy vpon himselfe for fauouring mee too much in a priuate
way, and for Countenancing y:t wxh the B[isho]pp of Westerose &
the Ignorant multitude with him is wont to call Caluinisme, will I
hope make him giue mee a quicke, but I know not how faire or
how resolute a dispatch. I will labour to make not onely a
freind-lye but an aduantagious retraite, as well as I can, & when I am
come to Elsenhoure (because here as yet are no ships for England)
send the printed copies & the excuses wxh I gaue in to the Lord
Channcellour to you.

The Danish Resident in this place hath shewed himselfe verv
freindly, and promised a great deale of furtherance in Denmarke, &
made mee promise to present my selfe to the Lord Channcellour
there. Yet I knowe not what I shall doe till I bee gone from
hence; my worke is, but a tryall of mens dispositions, if matters
frame aright, the prudence and authority of States will make vse
of all in due tyrne, if I cannot prepare a cleare way, I haue but
lost the labour of a priuate negotiation & gained some experience
vnto my selfe, and discoured the grounds of difficulties which after
tymes or more prudent courses & councells, will bee able in due
tyrne to take away. In ye meane tyrne I will depend vpon
Almighty god for a blessinge.

[John Durie].
