of the whole Clergie of this nation (to the number at least of an
hundred) hath been assembled, to breake off the treaties & cause
them declyne all further consultacons with mee, which in some
measure hee hath effected, but vet the vnreasonablenes of his
proceedings are apparent and doe ouerthrowe his purpose in the [-Jud-gem[en]ts-] {+Jud-
gem[en]ts+} of all the wiser Clergie, and of the Lords Regents, but
yet in a cause where a great multitude is prepossessed with Synister
thoughts, Statesmen and such as are in publique place, are loath to
appeare much. Therefore 1 am in expectacon what will bee done
hereafter & layinge some grounds for a future correspondency, w:ch
I would fayne drawe on betwixt the professors of the vniuersity of
Upsall, with the Arch B[isho]pp of that place, & your Lordship of
Ireland who haue done mee the honour (or rather to the cause of
god and Religion) the furtherance to correspond with mee and giue
mee councell hitherto.

To this effect I haue shewed the Lord Channc: a fewe dayes
agoe the letter w:ch your Lo[rdshi]pps a yeare agoe Joyntly sent
vnto mee, wherein your Lo[rdshi]pps doe a great deale of honour,
both to him and to this Church and State, hee was verve well
affected with the matter, but yet hee said y:t your aduice concerninge
a generall symbole taken from the anncient Churches would not bee
thought sufficient to compose matters of difference. I tould him

hee declared a willingnes to haue the matter contynued &
constantly kept a foote, & shewinge the difficulties and dangers w:ch
might befall vnto himselfe by reason of the vnreasonable Jealousies
of the meaner Clergie here if he should shewe himselfe vnaduisedly

more in myne absence then nowe whiles I am present and that hee
was resolued after my dep[ar]ture, to make a Journey towards
Vpsall for this very purpose to settle the diuines there in a settled
course towards the scope of this my negotiation.

This was the effect of our last Conference, wherein also hee
declared to see the Harmonia Confessionum, w:ch since I haue
giuen hirn to p[er]vse, Soe that hee doth study the matter, &
la-boureth to make himself able to dispose this Clergie both with
reasons & authoritie, towards the effect. These are the hopes, w:ch
giue mee for the present encouragem[en]ts, to bee constant; besides
that w:ch god vseth Comonly to worke in the Spirits of men, when
matters come to be agitated, and seriously considered, which oft
tymes is never done, till they find some opposition; as soon[e] as I
knowe the further resolution of the Lords Regents, or else of the
