ending of the disease, are exactly the same as
with us. It is not the cold air, but the lack of
air that starts the disease. Most of the monkeys
stand the cold surprisingly well, if provided with
ample accommodation for exercise and snug
sleeping quarters for the night, shared with a
rabbit as bed companion for the sake of the
warmth. As soon as autumn begins, ever vigilant
Mother Nature who watches over the monkeys
as well as over us, sets to work to provide their
shivering bodies with extra fur-coats, suitable
for northern winters. This applies to most
tropical animals imprisoned in northern climates,
who would all live much longer if allowed to
live in the open air. Most Zoological Gardens
seem to ignore this fact. Perhaps it is better so.
Whether the prolongation of the lives of these
unhappy animals is a thing to be desired I leave
to you to ponder over. My answer is in the
negative. Death is more merciful than we are.
