memorial entitled: “The Reformatory Fundamentals
of Olavus Petri,” published by Dean J. E. Berggren
at the time of the erection of a monument to Olavus
Petri at Stockholm, in 1898, the author styles him the
foremost reformer of the Church of Sweden, and says of
him: “The thought of what this man was able to
accomplish in so short a time, and at a juncture rife with
difficulties and untoward circumstances, cannot but
compel our admiration.” From other writers of the
most recent period many quotations might be adduced
to the same purport.
Not by violent appeal to men’s feelings and passions,
nor by rigorous laws and statutes, but alone by earnest
preaching of the Word of God in its Scriptural purity
and by zealous teaching of the gospel did Olavus Petri
endeavor to impart to his countrymen the saving truth
that makes men free in Christ Jesus. Besides this
Swedish Lutheran evangelist in the true sense, we
gratefully recall his two noted co-workers in the
reformatory task, Archdeacon Laurentius Andreæ of
Strängnäs, subsequently chancellor to King Gustav
Vasa, and Laurentius Petri, the younger brother of
Olavus, known as translator of the Bible and as the first
Lutheran archbishop of Sweden. Of Mikael
Lagerben, predecessor of Olavus Petri as rector of Storkyrkan
in Stockholm, we know merely this, that he had been a
