According to memoranda made by himself
or some chronicler of his time, Olavus Petri
was born January 6, 1493, in Örebro, a city in
the Swedish province of Nerike. It is further set down
in the same memoranda that his parents were Petrus
Olavi and Christina Laurentii. A statement giving
1497 as the year of his birth occurs as late as 1726, in
J. G. Hallman, his first biographer, of whom Prof.
Henrik Schück, at present Sweden’s foremost
literary scholar, justly remarks that his sources are often
found to be rather untrustworthy. We note the fact
that the father of Olavus Petri was a blacksmith, as
also that Martin Luther’s father was a miner, and the
father of Philip Melanchthon an armorer. So the life
work of Luther was to bring the rich ore out of the
deep shafts of Holy Writ. From the metal produced
therefrom his co-worker Melanchthon hammered out
the weapons used by the German theologians in their
religious warfare and doctrinal controversies. To
