work in the three years, 1516—1518, during which
Olavus Petri studied for Luther at Wittenberg. To
the great advantage of himself and of his fellow
countrymen, he now, through the grace of God, had the
benefit of hearing his teacher clearly expound the
Scriptures, and proclaim the gospel in spirit and in truth.
They were not legends, fables, or papal decrees, these
things that Luther presented to his students. He did
not base his instruction upon human wisdom, but solely
upon the firm foundation of the Word of God. “It is
so written,” that was Luther’s watchword, and he
submitted his faith and doctrine to the test of Scripture,
not only at Worms, but also in the closet of prayer.

During the school year of 1516 Doctor Luther gave
exegetical lectures on the Epistle to the Romans. The
manuscript of these lectures was found in Rome as late
as 1905 and was published at Leipsic in 1908. In Rom.
1:17 Luther had found his particular pearl of great
price in the words, “The just shall live by faith.” To
him this implied the blessed assurance that God in His
mercy and for the sake of Jesus Christ forgives us all
our sins, imputes unto us the righteousness of Christ,
and owns us as His children when with repentant
hearts we believe in Him. Luther’s convincing
Scriptural theology and his lectures on the Epistle to the
Romans worked a strong, constant faith and produced
vital experiences in the heart of the newly arrived
