Olavus Petri is manifested, for instance, in the close of
his brief but clearly Biblical explanation of the Second
Article in his excellent catechism. There the author
says:
“The sermon which deals with the Commandments
requires much of us that we are unable to do. Neither
does it lend power to fulfill that which is commanded.
But the sermon which deals with faith carries with it
grace and mercy. It tells us that God is willing to help
us do that which the Commandments require of us, and
even though all be not so fulfilled as it ought, yet He
will forgive our shortcomings for the sake of His Son
Jesus Christ, and of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit,
regenerating and sanctifying us. Through the
expounding of the Commandments we learn of the wrath of
God; through the preaching on faith we are taught of
His grace and mercy.”
As professor of theology, Luther abandoned the then
prevalent scholasticism, and all his students followed.
When he was called upon to explain his position
relative to the Roman traditions and legends, rules and
decrees, and the papal claims to infallibility, he had no
more faithful disciple and follower than Olavus Petri.
He says in his work, “On God’s Word and Man’s
Decrees” (Om gudz ordh och menniskios bodh och
stadhgar): "God’s Word is the Word of God as found in
Holy Writ, which comprises all that man needs to
