living, and setting up the sacrilegious claim that his red
cross, the sign of papal authority granted him, was as
efficacious as the Cross on Golgotha, and that by his
indulgences he had saved more souls than had both Paul
and Peter with all their preaching. True, the Roman
Church teaches that no indulgence can be conferred
without confession and absolution, but Tetzel made
provision for that by carrying with him a special father
confessor who looked after that ceremonial detail in the
same mercenary way.

Then came that memorable day in the history of the
Christian Church, the thirty-first of October, 1517.
In the afternoon of that day was held the celebration
by which the people of Wittenberg commemorated the
dedication of the Castle Church, the shrine of the
diocese, on All Saints’ Day. In that church, Elector
Frederick, called the Wise, had collected a thousand alleged
relics of sacred persons and objects, such as, a drop of
milk from the breast of the Holy Virgin, a fragment of
the staff of Aaron, a twig of the burning bush observed
by Moses at Hebron, and the like. The teachers and
students of the university, together with the people of
the city and the surrounding country, were to be
prepared by due ceremonies for viewing these sacred relics.
Doctor Luther preached that afternoon on Luke 19:1 ff,
exhorting his hearers to give their hearts to God, that
they might be dedicated as His temple.
