authority of the Holy Scriptures above that of church
fathers, church councils, and of the pope himself. That
was the true declaration of independence of evangelical
Protestantism.

During these turbulent years, 1517 and 1518, Doctor
Luther continued to preach and lecture as before. In
a letter to Doctor J. Lange, in July, 1517, he states
that he was preparing six or seven candidates for the
Master’s degree. One of these, apparently, was Olavus
Petri, who was promoted to the degree of A. M., at
Wittenberg, February 10, 1518. By the manly and yet
humbly Christian example of Luther during the years
1516—1518, Olavus Petri was being developed into a
like champion of faith, equally fearless in combating the
open tyranny and secret wiles of the devil and his
henchmen. Our Swedish Reformer was taught the use
of the whole armor of God, as described by Paul (Eph.
6: 13, 17), the breastplate of righteousness, the shield
of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the
Spirit, which is the Word of God. Thus equipped,
Olavus Petri all his life remained a true champion of
the truth, strong in the Lord and in the power of His
might. He was withal a faithful and humble Biblical
scholar, who gloried in nought, save in the cross of
Christ.

Olavus Petri is known to have stayed in Wittenberg
beyond the time when Luther returned, hale and
