expressing horror at this wholesale slaughter, he was
immediately dragged into the enclosure surrounding the
condemned victims, and he escaped, as by a special act
of Providence, on the bare testimony of a German who
knew him from Wittenberg and protested that he was
a citizen of Germany.

Olavus Petri, or, as he was now popularly called,
Master Olov, returned to Strängnäs and in 1521 began
publicly to preach the evangelical faith and to lecture
to certain candidates for the ministry and younger
pastors on portions of the New Testament. Among
hearers won over to the cause of the Reformation were
Archdeacon Laurentius Andreæ, vicar of the
diocese of Strängnäs, and Laurentius Petri, a younger
brother of Olavus, who presumably studied at
Wittenberg in 1527 and subsequently was consecrated as
the first Lutheran archbishop of Sweden. Doctor Nils
Ostgöte
, dean of Strängnäs, who vainly opposed
Olavus Petri, devised eight points from the teachings of
Master Olov, which he construed as heresies, seeking
to substantiate his charges by copious quotations from
legends, church fathers, etc. In complete accord with
Luther’s principle for reading and interpreting
Scripture, Olavus Petri is alleged to have made these
assertions:

“In authentic writing there is nothing said of St.
Anna as being the mother of the Virgin Mary.
