the clergy are not put under the ban for illicit
intercourse, according to the laws of the pope.”

During his service as secretary to the city council of
Stockholm, Olavus Petri preached regularly in the
church now known as Storkyrkan, as vicar to Master
Mikael Lagerben, the parish rector. He was popularly
known as “Master Olov in the basket,” owing to the
basketlike appearance of his pulpit. There he was
frequently greeted with the throwing of stones by the
faithful Romanists, who thus proved their
“righteousness by works.” Of this Laurentius Petri subsequently
wrote: “The preachers were obliged to stand the fire
of the opposition and were made the targets for the
poisoned arrows of many a murderous tongue; for at
that time those were held to stand highest in favor with
God who were loudest in vilification of the Lutherans
as heretics, forfeiters of the faith, traitors to God, and
such other infamies as they were able to devise.”
Master Olof, however, by his humble yet fearless
appearance and by the spiritual power of his evangelical
preaching, gained for himself the confidence of the
saner element of the population.

In order to meet the needs of the government, the
king placed several monasteries under the
administration of the crown, whereupon a number of monks went
as missionaries to Lapland and several monks and nuns
