gospel, I have nothing tq glory of; for necessity is laid
upon me; for woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!’
Now, just as it was a necessity laid upon Paul to preach,
and he would have merited condemnation for not
preaching, so also with all ministers, for they all have
the mandate of God to administer His office. Woe
unto them, if they preach not! That is a fearful and
terrible judgment.–-
"The Apostle Paul saith (i Cor. 9: 13): ’Know ye
not that they that minister about sacred things eat of
the things of the temple, and they that wait upon the
altar have their portion with the altar? Even so did
the Lord ordain that they that proclaim the gospel
should live of the gospel.1 From these words one may
well gather that those for whom the Word of God is
being preached are in duty bound to provide the
preachers with sustenance and a livelihood. They, therefore,
who shirk their duty, withholding their due share, act
contrary to the commandment and ordinance of God.
For Paul plainly says in these words, that the Lord
hath so ordained that even as under the old covenant
they that served in the temple and officiated at the altar
should live of the things of the temple and the altar, so
also shall they that preach the gospel receive their
support therefrom. He who shirks in this respect evades
the ordinance of God and is unworthy of having the
gospel preached to him.–-
