entirely original, each in the form of a short and
beautifully worded prayer. In this connection may be
mentioned a book published by him in 1529, bearing the
title: "A Little Introduction into the Holy Scriptures"
(En liten ingong i then helga schrifft). This valuable
work was translated from a "Manual for Young
Christians," written by J. Tolts, a German Lutheran
pastor.

The Church Book of Olavus Petri was issued in
1529 in consequence of the transactions of the Church
Council of Orebro, held the same year. The Church
Book contains rituals for baptism, marriage, the
churching of mothers, visits to the sick, consecrating a
marriage after death, burial, and the preparation of
convicts for execution. It corresponds to the Catholic
Manuale with the exclusion of purely Roman Catholic
forms, such as masses for the dead. This was the first
Protestant Church Book not only of the Church of
Sweden but of the entire Protestant Church, Luther’s
baptismal formulary of 1523 being the only Protestant
form for church rites published up to this time.

It may be stated here that many precious jewels
from this "Hand-book" have been preserved in the
Swedish Lutheran Church Books. Among these may be
mentioned the beautiful prayer composed by Olavus
Petri to be read at burial of the dead, beginning,
"Almighty, merciful and eternal God, who on account of
