sin," etc. This prayer has been translated from the
Swedish Church Book of 1811 and inserted in the
Prussian "Hofkirchen Agende" of 1822. The same is
true of the Swedish order requiring the minister to
throw earth into the grave three times, while he says:
"Dust thou art; unto dust shalt thou return; Jesus
Christ, our Saviour, shall raise thee on the last day."
This form was translated from the Hand-book of
Olavus Petri for the Malmo Church Book of 1532 for
Skane, for the Danish ritual of 1680, for the Prussian
Agenda, and for the Bavarian Agenda of 1850.

That several of these formulas had been written some
time before appears from the Rhymed Chronicle of
Messenius, which has this passage:

"On Master Olov’s wedding day
The Lutherans their respects did pay
By holding their first Swedish mass,
The which is plain to every class;
In Wittenberg this happened too,
And Master Olov was there to view,
When at Carlstadt’s wedding feast
A German mass was said by a Priest."

(The English is purposely made crude in imitation
of the original, which runs thus:

Pa Master Oluffs Brollopsdag
War Lutherskom sa till behag,
Att forsta Swenska Massa ta
Blef hdllen, then alia forsta,
