somewhere abroad, and we have not the slightest
influence with the Foreign Telegraph Company.“
There was an impression that the Government
would throw their status and position into the
scale, so as to ensure that the raercantile public
should be served satisfactorily? — There is no
reason whatever why we should not throw our sta
tus and position into the scale, and endeavour to
ensure accuracy on the part of Telegraph Com
panies. We are on very good terms ivith foreign
countries.
3291. You make conventions of various
kinds with foreign countries now? — Yes.
3292. Is there anything to prevent your do
ing the same thing with regard to Telegraph
Companies ? — Provided that our tenants, the Sub
marine Company, ivere in accord ivith us, there
would be no difficidty.
3293. Will you promise me that this shall
have your consideration; I may State to you hut
one reason why theg mercantile community are
in favour of your scheme is, that they believe
that the transit of all foreign raessages will be
greatly improved in every possible way by the
Post Office håving command of the matter? —
1 think that I can undertake to say that the mat
ter shall have consideration; 1 think that 1 can
say for the Postmaster General, that if this Bill
should become law, he will have to send some
one abroad to make inquiries ivith respect to the
telegraphs, and I have no doubt that he will do
all that he possibly can to impress upon Foreign
Telegraph Companies the necessity of greater ac
curacy and care.
3294. Did you receive a letter from the
Newcastle Chamber of Commerce suggesting the
propriety of allowing five additional words to
your number to be sent for an additional 2 d.%
— Yes; under the charges specified in the Bill we
shall power to do that if it were desir
able at any time; 1um inclined to think that the
jump of 6d. for 10 words is toomuch; that mat
ter will have consideration; there would be poiver
to make the alteration under the Bill.
Publikum skulde blive tilfredsstillende betjent?
— Der er ingensomhelst Grund, hvorfor vi ikke
skulde lægge vor Stilling og Indflydelse i Vægt
skaalen ogbestrcebe osfor at sikkre Akkuratesse fra
Telegrafkompagniern.es Side. Vi staa paa en me
get god Fod med fremmede Lande.
3291. De gjør Konventioner af forskjelligt
Slags med fremmede Lande nu? — Ja.
3292. Er der Nogenting iveien for, at De
gjør det Samme med Hensyn til Telegrafkompag
nierne? — Forudsat at vore Forpagtere, Subma
blive overveiet. Jeg tænker, jeg kan sige paa Ge
neralpostmesterens Vegne, at dersom denne Bill
at indpmente fremmede Telegrafkompagnier Nød
vendigheden af større Akkuratesse og Omhygge
lighed. <
3294. Modtog De et Brev fra Newcastle
Handelskammer, der tilraadede som hensigtsmæs
sigt at tillade at sende 5 Ord mere end Deres
Antal for et Tillæg af 2 Pence? — Ja, under
Denne Sag vil blive overveiet; man vilde have
Magt under Billen til at gjøre Forandringer.
