CAP XII

Tonitruum effectus.                                         FORMIDABILEM vim, & essedum habent tonitrua,
                                         fulmina atque coruscationes in Septentrionalibus
terris, præsertim versus loca opposita mendici, propter fertilium
locorum crassum vaporem: qui cum humidus ascenderit
ad locum frigidum, videlicet ad medium aëris, inspissantur,
ac aggregantur partes eius, diversosque causant
effectus, vt pluviam, grandinem, nivem, & caliginem, secundum
quod frigore condensatur. Cum autem comprimitur
calor eius, nubiumque latera propter frigus exire
prohibetur, nubem violenter rumpit, tonitrumque causat
Coruscatio vehementem. Fit etiam tonitrus extinctione ignis in ventre nubis. Coruscatio vero
Fulgur. est pars aëris, ex impetu ignis sic excussi resplendens. Fulgur autem & fulmen, est ictus
cœlestis jaculi, a seriendo secundum Isido. sic dicti, etiam e sententia Virg. in Geor.
Ipse pater media nimborum in nocte coruscat,
Fulmen.         Fulmina molitur dextra.                 Seneca tamen dicit fulmen esse fulgur incensum,
quod vbicunque deciderit, ibi sulphuris odorem retineat. lmmo cessante fulmine, ac
pluvia, quandoque sulphur in campis colligitur spissitudine taurinæ cutis, licet nulli
sit accommodum. Apparent sæpissime in partibus Aquilonis sub sereno cœlo totis
noctibus in Septembri clara, atque continua fulmina, quæ magis minantur, quam
lacerant inspectores, dum arcanis rationibus(vnde extrahuntur)nubes non longe positæ
Opinio vulgi. fulminandi materiam tenuem administrant. Alia vero vulgi opinio est de fulmine
hujusmodi nocturno, quod infinita pinguium piscium agmina (halecum scilicet ) suo
continuo reflexu, ac saltu, post autumni initium. tantum splendorem nubibus immittant,
vt coruscatio e cœlo decidere credatur nullaque sine tali spectaculo nox est, prout
Fulminis effectus. inferius lib. de piscibus cap. de halecibus ostendetur. Fulmen vero natura nubium
exortum, tonitruque elapsim, gravissima damna mortalibus, aliisque rebus ibidem insert.
Plures etenim homines sublimiora loca inhabitantes, cum iumentis interimit:
excelsas etiam turres, & ædes dura pice linitas (quod mirum non est ) inextinguibili
Ritus gentis avertendi fulminis. flamma consumit: altas arbores, vel e summo vertice directe findit, vel
obliqua corrosione contundit. Ne autem civitates, aut maturæ messes fulmine
colliderentur, religioso ritu post acceptam fidem Catholicam observatum suit,
credoque
