De duello pugilum.

CAP. XXV.

                                        EXISTIMABANT Gothorum pugiles, nullum certaminis
genus efficacius esse ad capessendam fortitudinis
palmam, quam duellum: propria etenim virtute subnixum, Duellum.
alienæ manus opem excludebat. Iamque receptum
erat ab omnibus ordinibus, vt pro victo haberetur, quicunque
eam pugnæ fortem recusabat: vt Regibus, & principibus
sempiterno opprobrio daretur, si illud ( Quamvis
ab infimæ fortis hominibus provocati ) abnuissent. Veterum

opibus existimabatur, præsertim vbi paucorum forte exequi posset, quod vniverforum
discrimine sedari nequiret. Tantusque erat illis ardor duello congrediendi, Ardor duelli.
quanta solet esse voluptas effœminatis proceribus ad lauta convivia invitari. Quippe
tunc convivalibus gaudiis alacrius indulserunt, cum convivium duello absolvendumPræmia victoriæ.
erat. Donabantur victores singulari fortitudinis gloria, Martis hedera redimiti:
præmiis victricibus decorati, virtutis laudem promeverunt: ignavus palma caruit, Ignavi palma carent.
rediitque inglorius armis: vitæ deformitas extremum dedecus: summa infelicitas inertes
commitabatur. Enimuero quemadmodum Romani suos Camillos, Curios, Fabricios, Romani.
Calatinos, Scipiones, Marcellos, Maximos, Paulos, Marios, summis
laudibus ob res gestas extulerunt: ita Aquilonares fortia facta suorum sempiterna
