De Cæstibus, & Gymnicis palmis.

CAP. XXVI

                                        CÆSTVVM certamen inter Septentrionales pugiles
satis validum reputabatur, licet in raro vsu ob graves fortesque
manus hominum sint, vt congredientibus opus nonManum pro malleo fortes vtuntur
fuerit corio, vel plumbo insuto graviorem infligere ictum,
quando so!o pugno instar mallei caput, vel corpus obiectum
contundere possent. Notum enim relinquitur cæstuumCæstuum tormenturn.
tormentum apud antiquissimos pugiles nil aliud fuisse
quam lorum e corio bubalino manibus circumvoluntum,
quo & ictum minus ipsi sentirent, & gravius adversarium
ferirent. Præterea plumbeas massas coriis insuentes, grandi periculo, vel
morte mutuos humeros contundebant. De quibus loris fortissimis tantummodo
viris adscriptis, poëta refert: Virg. 5. Aenei.
In medium geminos immani pondere cæstus
Projecit: quibus acer Eryx in prælia suetus
Ferre manum, duroque intendere brachia tergo
        Obstupuere animi, tantorum ingentia septem
Terga boum, plumbo insuto, ferroque rigebant.
Gymnicis vero palmis, id est, nudis vnctisque corporibus, rarissime (nisi apud singularesGymnicis palmis.
athletas fiebant certamina. Pro vlciscenda enim ignominia, etsi suscipiuntur
pugnæ, luctæ, vel alia gladiatorum munera: non tamen nudis corporibus, nisi
solo brachio dextro in hastiludiis, seu torneamentis, pro vana ostentatione in
spicientium illustrium puellarum. Sed hi fere nulli, vel rarissimi reperiuntur, ob
innatam verecundiam nudandi corporis in aspectibus singulorum. Meminit tamenVerecundia nudare corpus.
Saxo, Frothonem non tantum Regiis ornamentis, quantum gymnicis palmis in athletarum
numero excelluisse. Præterea Hotherum quendam stirpis Regiæ, cestuumFrotho rex.
peritia inter coævos suos, alia militarium exercitiorum agilitate claruisse. NequeHotherus rex.
horum certaminum nominibus deest S. Ausustinus lib. XVIII. de Civita. Dei
