De militaribus exercitiis.

CAP. XIX.

INTER alia Septentrionalium bellatorum, seu equestrium
exercitia, vnum erat præcipuum, vt quicunque tentaret
ea ingredi, & prosequi, haudquaquam ambigeret sub ardua
Patientia durissima.                                         se patientia ferream disciplinam subiturum: primum
quod contra sævissima elementa cunctorum certaminum
initia esset ingressurus, videlicet hyemales vigilias in glacialibus
castris facessere, nec a loco quocunque frigore, vel
Exercitia terribilia.                                         tempestate sæviente avelli: deinde famem, æstumque die ac
nocte necessitatem vrgente pati: præterea equos ad omnem
pugnandi insultum, & motum agitare, contos circum humeros gyrare, equosque in
saltum per fossata, sepes, ac trabes cogere, vt in bellicis simulachris sub florida pace,
Pax rarissima apud Aquilo lonares. quæ rarissima apud Martiales cernitur, continue addisceret, quæ postmodum
in acerrimis certaminibus pro patria libertate pugnando, velut regulam observaret.
Qua ab industria militaritium animos assidua exercitatione lex militaris corroborabat:
Lex militaris. nam & decurrere eos cogebat, & in equum agiliter desilire, armatosque tripudiis agitari,
Ona militibusauserenda. & tuba classicum personante obtundi, ne forte e quiete, & otio bellorum
obliti, vel ignari in veris præliis remollescerent, aut in turpem fugam laberentur. Vt
enim otium in omni re perniciosum est, ita in militaribus disciplinis noxium, &
abhorrendum. Quippe sub eo militare genus hominum suapte natura ad res optime
constitutas commovendas, & conturbandas promptum, in mille seditionesrum &
Milites seditiosi dominosdere solet. proditiones illico ruit: primumque proprios Principes, quorum negligentia otiari,
vel lascivire permittuntur, ve! hostibus domestica fraude instruda produnt, vel in
aperto prælio crudeliter perimendos ostendunt. Sed longe detestabilius otium est,
quando ab ipsis Principibus supremis ad subditorum enervationem assumi videntur,
Heliogabalus. prout infame posteris argumentum magni autores tradunt Heliogabalum reliquisse:
qui peractis infinitis ineptiis, tandem per scurras occisus est, ac per plateas,
& cloacas sordidissime tractus, & in Tyberim submissus.
Gallenus. Idem de Galieno homine socordissimo, aliisque
similibus naturæ portentis, infinita
patent exempla
Adhuc
