LIBER NONUS        285

De eodem

CAP. V.

ASSERIT etiam Vin. in spe. histo. lib. XXXI, cap.
                                        X. Indorum Regem, qui vulgo Presbyter Ioannes dicitur, Presbyter Ioannes Indiæ.
                                        gravissimo Saracenorum Aethiopum, Videlicet Christianæ
fidei persecutorum, exercitu hostili impetitum, stratagemate
prædicto non dissimili sese liberasse. Fecit enim
imagines cupreas hominum, & vnamquanque posuit superImagines cupreæ.
equum: retro quam imaginem in eodem equo hominem directorem
collocavit, follem habentem, quo ignem per ordinata
foramina excitaret in fumosa materia, intus in prædicta
imagine prius immissa. Itaque multis equis, & imaginibus eo modo dispositis
contra hostes antedictos ( quos & Mongalos, sive Tartaros vocat ) strenue processit. Mongali, sive Tartari.
Cumque ad locum prælii pervenisset, equos cum imaginibus, ac eorum directoribus
(vt præmittitur ) ordinatos, vnum lateraliter juxta alium in hostilem exercitum
præmisit, præcepto dato, vt mox ante eorum aciem follibus sufflarent ignem
intus fumantem: aëremque tenebris continuo flatu densarent, quatenus caligineTenebræ palpabiles excitantur.
quasi palpabili hostes circumfunderentur: quo evenit, vt sagittis frequentibus impetiti
plures perimerentur, aut in fugam repentinam laberentur. Immo refert multos
homines, ac equos, igne Græco ibidem fuisse inter tenebras incineratos, aut combustos:
qui ignis componitur e his rebus, modo suis artificibus noto: Ignis Græcus sic componitur.
Aspaltum, nepta, dragantum, pix quoque Græca,
Sulphur, vernicis, de petrolio quoque vitro,
Mercurii, sal gemmæ: , Græci dicitur ignis. .
Item: Sulphur, petrolium, colopho, resi, terebinthi,
Aspaltum, camphora, nepta, damo, benedictum.
Versibus his etsi quis adhibuerit operam interpretandis, tamen raro puto verum eorum
sensum comprehendi posse, nec opus arbitror in eorum interpretatione immorandum
esse, cum atrocissimum exitum habere videntur in sui executione.
