LIBER DECIMVS        345

quia hi inter cavos maris sinus, charybdes, scyllas, syrtes, rupes, tempestates, Experti.
& naufragia, ac mille pericula, vt justa perficiant, & pœnas evadant, admonentur: Advocati.
vbi advocati, causidici, judices, per solitudines legum euntes, perraro
conformem legem inveniunt, quo breviter, aut compendiose subveniant angustiatis. Præfecti classiarii.
Igitur præfecti classiarii, ac subpræfecti in aquis justitiam exerceant, quia
eam difficulter obnoxia instrumenta in terrra videbunt. Insuper notandum est, hisNaufragium passis plura creduntur.
plerunque plura, majoraque gubernandi navigia amplius dirigenda committi, qui plures
difficultates, & infortunia quandoque evaserunt: prudentia hos longe magis præstare,
qui nondum infelices fuere. Et hæc solent præcipua Batavorum, sive Hollandorum,
esse circumspectio in navibus ad fortunam (vt aiunt ) committendis.

CAP. XVIII.

VIDENTES viri nefarii, scelerati, ac temerarii, sortumViri nefarii.
nam alicuius strenui ducis, ac præfecti, ob sinistrum & insuperabilem
rei militaris eventum, labefactari posse, mox
eius honori potestatique insidiantes, infinita mendacia conflant,
quibus eos pertinaci militum turmultu, & temerario
applausu, & judicio a honore, immo versus onere destituant,
& sese surrogent in locum eorundem. Inprimis igitur
                                        sicarios, proditores. dominorum propriorum desertores,
Reipublicæ fures, & contemptores, quasi commilitones
alacriter salutatos convocant, simulantes se eorum misereri, quod magnis bellis,
majoribus periculis, & maximis denique laboribus sint implicati, quasi nullus
modus, nulla vsquam requies fatigatis eorum animis concedi possit, sed vbique bellando,
pererrando, bellis bella addendo, miseram vitam ferant: nullam tam onerosa
militia dignam suscepturi mercedem, vt non milites armorum, sed iniqui & avari
domini thesaurorum custodes reputetur: præterea in nivibus, pluviis, pruina, gelu
obruti, per vasta deserta sequi oportere infortunati principis castra, quasi alicuius.
profugi hominis incommoda semper accepturi. Quocirca suadens, hortantur, &
fictis additis lachrymis tumultuarios milites prava consuetudine ductos blandiendo,
magna pollicendo ( quod difficile non est ) inducunt, vt infortunatos dominos deferant,
ac se, vt splendidiores, fortunatiores, victoriosiores omnibus ditissima spolia,
& immensas libertates completa militia reddituros. Quo sit, vt hac peste corrupti
milites, sæpe verso clypeo (de perfidissimis, & effœminatis dicitur, non fortibus
viris ) optimos dominos deferant, ac eorum adversariis adhærentes,
quæcunque pessima excogitare poterunt, vetustis ivis patronis
infligant. Tales autem desertores, & proditores,
quocunque demum disgregati effugerint,
digna vltione non
carebunt.
