CAP. XXIII.


                                        QVAMVIS non minus infaustum, quam temerarium sit,
Equites et pedites armati natant.                                         armatum equitem, vel peditem gurgiti natando se committere:
                                        attamen quia Gothi omnia temporum momenta ad
                                        excolendam militiam collaturi erant, nullas partes militari
                                        exercitio idoneas experiri omiserunt. Quocirca artem, &
                                        vsum aquis innatandi, adeo perfecte calluerunt, vt plerunque
                                        armis onusti, atque equis invecti, magna fluminum spatia inter
                                        hostiles exercitus ad resistendum, vel fugiendum tranatarent.
Equi ad natandum instructi.                                         Nec minori equos industria, quam seipsos, ad natandi
consuetudinem instruebant, prout Cornelius Tacitus asserit de Germanis: quorum
nobilissimum institutum erat, equos ad natandi studium informare, audacterque
( vt Herodianus lib. VIII. testatur sese fluminibus cum equis natare peritis, immergere.
Equus Biornonis pugilis. Nec testimonium Saxonis in hoc casu omittendum est. Is enim dicit, Biornonem
quendam Norvegianum insignem pugilem, equum habuisse præstantem corpore,
præpetem velocitate, adeo animosum, vt indefessus obstrepentem vorticem
superaret: cujus aquæ lapsus tam incito, ac præcipiti volumine defertur, vt animalia
nandi vigore defecta, plerunque pessundare soleat. Eo tamen equo tum Fridlevo
pugile fortissimo ( de quo superius in V. lib. dictum est ) vrgente, tum scrupeo,
atque iniquo loco, privatus est, & ad vltimum hostili stratagemate equi errore captivatus.
Species equi Seiani non deficit. Ita nullibi terrarum species, aut natura videtur deficere equi Seiani. Quod
autem Gothorum equi eiusmodi natandi artibus perhibentur instructi, necessariam
causam magnitudo, latitudoque immen sorum fluminum vbilibet administrat.
Gothi præliantur in aquis. Vix enim vlla certamina apud Orientales, Occidentalesque Gothos,
aut Finnos, Ruthenos, & Moschos instaurari, vel perfici
possunt, nisi aquarum vastitas, &
vorax impetus superetur.
