CAP. XXXIIII.

                                        SATIS terribile, atque inusitantum videntur hoc bellicum
                                        instrumentum, horribiliusque fieret, si quoduis eius secretum
                                        pro loco, tempore, quomodo, ac quando, & vbi
Multa libent sed non licent.                                         applicandum foret, declararetur. Verum cum multa sint,
                                        quæ nequeant, aut congruant, vel expediant, etiam si liceant,
                                        manifestari, volens hic prætereo malum interpretari,
                                        ne cuiquam perniciosum, aut noxium fiat: satis esse reputans,
                                        apud Gothos, & Sueones talia tormenta inveniri,
                                        quibus hostis crudelis accedens arceri poterit, aut ita
humiliari, vt discat quietius domi vivere, quam alienam infringere libertatem. Est &
Tormenti genus. aliud tormenti genus bellicum, longe vetustius, inter duas sublimes, & elevatas
trabes per modum libræ in medio suspensum: cujus altera pars humi, vel deorsum
ligata, bursam habent duabus, vel tribus bovinis cutibus, & chordis, instar projectilis
Cadavera putrida projiciuntur in arces. fundæ coriariæ adaptatam: quam putridis cadaveribus, equorum scilicet, vel
canum, aut lapidibus, vel ferreis globis repletam, solutis tenaculis altera pars immensi
ponderis alligati, vehementissimo impetu ad destinatum arcis, vel vrbis locum
Blida. in obsidione per aëra fundit. Hocque instrumentum vulgari Gothico Blida dicitur,
quasi alacritatis nomen per contrarium, omnibus incutiens terrorem, & ruinam.
Blid jucundus dicitur, sed minime in hoc casu. Vetus relatio est, ante vrbem
Anus per aëra projecta salvars reperta est. Calmarnensem Meridionalis Gothiæ anum quandam pausandi gratia sese in hujusmodi
bursam immisisse, atque incaute baculo tenaculum resolvisse, etiam ob id
per aëra injectam fuisse, vt cadens in pyramidem recenter collecti fœni, in
hostili vrbe reciperetur illæsa: demumque pro miraculo cætteris
eam intueri volentibus, per plures annos reservata.
Sed de his ignivomis fundis superiori
libro nonnihil diffusius est
