                                        QVANTVM ad pictoriam artem attinet, rari sunt in totoPictores rari in Aquilone.
                                        Septentrionem exquisiti, vel excellentes pictores: non quia
                                        ingenio carere credantur, sed quoniam ad artem non aptantur.
                                        Naturali tamen ingenio ita quidam pollent, vt pura
                                        simplicitate picturarum, quasi monstrando elucident apertissimam
                                        historiæ, vel rerum proprietatem: vti celebris, ac
                                        clara memoria adhuc habetur de quodam Augustino Vastenensi:Augustinus pictor Vastenensis.
                                        qui tam devota, quam admiranda spectacula de passione
                                        CHRISTI, & sacris mysteriis circa annos Domini1500.
M. D. vbique arte, & pietate florens, & moriens reliquit. Habeo tamen pro verisimili,
quod hac corrupta ætate sensati principes illarum regionum, vt in stucturis
sunt magnifici, ita & in hac arte, & honestis imaginibus inspiciendis, potiusquam
in turpibus admittendis, sunt animati, exemplum a gloriosis Regibus veteris
ævi trahentes: qui virtutibus heroicis, ac clarissimis rebus intenti, nusquam deprehenduntur
nudas hominum imagines, præsertim mulierum, quacunque excellentiaNudæ mulierum imagines quasi infames picturæ habentur in Aquilone.
depictas, & suis aspectibus præsentatas admisisse, vel vt eorum subditis ostenderentur,
sub pœna permisisse. Admirabili etenim verecundia populus earum frigidarum
regionum, & castitatis observatione tenetur, vt ne signum quidem appareat,
vnde excitari poterint ad brutalem lasciviam, & commixtionem: qualem vt
Lutherani in hæretici omnium impurissimi statuerent, nudas, turpesque figuras connivente
superiori potestate, sub excellentia picturarum, & admiratione artis introduxerunt:
quæ licet-plures honestas personas turbarunt, nunquam tamen naturalem pudoremImpudicæ imagines constantes non turbant.
in gente castis moribus instituta, extinguere valuerunt, immo nec impio ferro,
flamma, vel exquisitis torturis pudicitiam violare mulierum, aut oblatione munerum
evertere castitatem, quemadmodum superius lib. V. in aliquot capituli. versus
finem reperitur ostensum, & sequenti lib. cap. IIII.

                                        CVM autem multa sint in disciplinis & artibus, quæ nullis
                                        præceptis edoceri possunt, immo etiam vix ea propriis verbis
                                        exprimi, quæ magno ingenio sublimes viri, alta cogitatione,
                                        diurnoque vsu adepti sunt: ideoque recurrendumPictorum ars.
                                        est ad intimum eximiorum pictorum opificium, qui animi
                                        affectus penicillo, vmbra, lumine, ac colorum varietate rectius
                                        exprimere, & tutius patefacere possunt. Non enim satis
                                        est, pictorem corporum tenus laborare, sed animi quoque
                                        sensus, vt exprimat omni cura, omnique diligentia innitatur
oportet, quemadmodum plurimi ( teste Plinio), aliique artium inventores, excellentes
