De Arietibus, & Agnis.

CAP. I.

Gotlandia, de qua supra lib. 2. cap. 24.                                         INSVLA est in Gothico mari, regno Gothorum, seu
Suetiæ subjecta, Gotlandia, id est bona terra, ab omnibus
eam frequentantibus sic nominata, eo quod inter Aquilonares
insulas merito felix & abundans, ob plurimas naturæ
dotes, computari debeat, & magnificari. Hæc arietes,
Arietes feroces.                                         sive verueces, cæteris robustiores, & proceriores producit:
quibus quaterna, vel octona cornua crescunt: tantumque
ferociæ a cornibus mutuant, vt tempore coitus, nisi serra, vel
lima demantur, cæteris animantibus sint nocumento, ipsique
Lana longa. pastori rebelles. Lanam habent longam, & mollem: quam aliquando Romæ exigua
veste resolutam, artifices birreta facientes, miræ commendarunt. Habet etiam tota
Septentrionalis regio magnorum arietum, & ovium multitudines: in quibus & fœminæ
cornua gerunt arcuata: quod Homero, & Aristoteli videtur mirum: vbi Albertus
Albertus lib. 18 cap. 6. in lib. De animalibus, de monstroso partu loquens, dicit se vidisse arietem
quatuor magna cornua in capite geflantem, & duo longa in cruribus, instar cornuum
Animalia sine cornibus. caprinorum. Sunt & multa loca versus polum Arcticum, vbi nec arietes, nec oves
cornua habent, neque tauri, aut vaccæ. Ferocitas arietis cohibetur, si cornua juxta
Cornua deponenda. aures terebrantur: alias in anfractum convoluta, majorem furiam excitant: famemque,
ne humili herba pascatur, citius administrant: quia arida loca saniorem herbam habent,
Loca arida herbas habent saniores. quam palustria: quæ morbos juducunt. Aries albus fœtum generat alterius coloris.
Fuscus vero, teste Columella, nunquam generat album. Dicit etiam Albertus,
arietis lanam, totam sequi generationem. Arcentur etiam arietes a coitu per biennium,
vt facile libidinem augeat dilatio voluptatis. Arietis vermem capiti inesse,
Aries diligit agnellos. Albertus negat physica ratione. Dicit etiam, arietes naturaliter agnellos diligere.
Aries dimidio anno super vnum latus, dimidioque super alterum dormire dicitur.
Cornua etiam arietum ( teste Plinio lib. XI. cap. XXXVII. )cera ferventi torquentur
in plures ramos.
