CAP. IX.

Oculi grandes, velut ante caput jacentes.
Aures breves, & acutæ, antrorsum porrectæ.
Nares apertæ, profundius in aquas submergendæ.
                                        Cauda longa, spissa, & rotunda.
                                        Audax, & naribus sufflans.
                                        Pedibus terram terens, ac circunspiciens.
                                        Hinnitu membris tremens, quia fortis.
Facile in quiete concitatus ad motum.
Facile rursus a motu quiescens.
Se purgans, & volutans in pulvere, vel nivibus.
Colore niger, rusus, balius, sive badius, spadicus, palmæ colore, vel castaneæ:
quem Virg. in Georgi. commendat. Virg. in georg.
Aureus, roseus, myrteus, glaucus, vel oculis variis, quasi pictus.
Scutulatus, canus, guttatus, varius, e nigro badioque distinctus.
Cinerius, qui equis sylvestribus convenit, deterrimus est, vt Isidorus dicit:
sed optimus, quando lata linea nigra in dorso notatur.
Candidus equus raro est bonus viatoribus, ob insultum latronum e castrisEqui candidi periculosi.
eminentioribus itinera contemplantium: quos periculosum est ( tanquam
lucerna in tenebris accensa ) candidis equis ad spollandum itinerantes provocare.

Adhuc de aliis signis emendi Equi.

CAP. X.

PRæTEREA cautelæ in equo emendo hæ, & similes
                                        videntur diligentius attendendæ.
                                        Si frenum recipiat.
                                        Si sessorem excipiat
                                        Si exceptum excutiat.
Si dimissus aufugit, aut celeriter recipitur. Signa boni equi.
Si verbere torpens, vel excitatior fit.
Item de qua terra est, montana, vel palustri.
Cujus ætatis: quod difficile cognitu non est, quia annorum
notæ cum corpore mutantur.
Dum bimus & sex mensium est, medii dentes superiores, & inferiores cadunt.
Cum quartum annum agit, his, qui canini appellantur, dejectis, alios affert.
Intra sextum deinde annum molares superiores decidunt. Sexto anno, quos
primos mutaverit, exæquat. Septimo omnes explentur æqualiter: & ex
eo cavatos gerit, nec postea quot annorum sit, facile comprehendi potest.
Item decimo anno tempora cavari, & supercilia nonnunquam canescere,
dentesque prominere, & albescere Plinius dicit, contra morem omnium animantium.
