De Alcium medicinis dexteri pedis, & captura earum

CAP.II.

                                        VNGVLA exterior dexteri lateris, pedis posterioris,
                                        onagri masculi, qui non genuit, abscisa a vivo pede securi, Medicina ex vngula alcis.
                                        vel alio instrumento avulsa post medium Augusti, spasmum,
                                        aut morbum caducum patienti adhibita, continuo sanat.
                                        Simile scribitur de pelle hippopotami, quod e sinistra
                                        partem frontis inguini alligata, venerem inhibet. AlcesModus venandi alces.
                                        igitur instar cervorum gregatim in vasta solitudine vagantur,
                                        insidiisque extensorum telorum, industria venatorum
                                        sæpissime capiuntur, vel maximorum canum insultu retruduntur
in antra rupium, vt inde raro vivæ evadant: immo quiescentes humi, vel
erecti stantes onagri maximi, a minima quandoque mustela guttur insiliente mordentur, Alces maximæ a bestiola occiduntur.
vt sanguine decurrente, illico deficiant morituri. Adeo insatiabilis est
hæc bestiola in cruore sugendo, vt vix similem suæ quantitatis habeat in omnibus
creaturis. Hacque bestia cannis imposita, chordaque directa, quidam prædantur nidosMustela.
hirundinum, columbarum, & gallinarum, vt earum extrahant pullos: quibus
mire insidiatur, hoc solo instinctu, vt sanguinem sugat, quasi ventrem haberet elephante
majorem. Sic & Plinio autore lib. VIII. cap. XXV. ichneumon perCrocodilus.
fauces, vt telum aliquod, illabitur in os crocodili, eiusque erodit aluum. Sic & erinaciusErinacius.
vrsum, & minimus serpens interemptorem, immo & ipsi delphini cultellatoDelphinus.
dorso Nilum ingredientes, suum hostem interimunt crocodilum: vbi alioquin imparesAnimalia sciunt arma hostium suorum.
viribus essent extra amnem. Callent enim in hoc cuncta animalia, sciuntque non modo
sua commoda, verum & hostium adversa: norunt sua tela, norunt occasiones,
partesque dissidentium imbelleis. In ventre mollis, tenuisque cutis est crocodilo ideo
se vt territi immergunt delphini, subeuntesque aluum, illam secant spina. Nec solæGens Tentyricarum.
bestiæ adversantur crocodilo, sed & gens Tentyricarum ferox, & pusilla: quæ (vt
supra cap. XX. lib. præcedenti dictum est)minaci vultu, & manu audet imre conflictum
cum crocodilis: qui timidos fugant, & audacibus minime resistunt.
