CAP. V.

Habitatio castorum.                                         ETSI Solinus Ponticas aquas tantummodo inhabitare, &
                                        genus propagare æstimat castores: tamen in Rheno, Danubio,
                                        atque paludibus Moraviæ reperitur id genus in copia
Abundantia castorum maxima in Septentrione.                                         magna. Sed salva hac opinione, divinæ providentiæ attribuendum
                                        est, quod maxima horum animalium abundantia
                                        est in Septentrionalibus aquis, eo quod quietiores sunt,
                                        quam Rheni, vel Danubii: vbi strepitus est, & incessabilis
Domus castorum super aquas.                                         navigantium labor. In Aquilone infiniti fluvii sunt, & arbores
                                        aptissime, pro domibus ædificandis: quas & mira fabricant
arte, docente magistra natura. Gregatim etenim ad cædenda ligna incedunt,
dentibusque ligna præscindunt, & præscissa ad sua latibula miro modo comportant.
Ignavi castores laborare coguntur. Nam vnum e suo gregem laboribus inutilem, desidem, aut ignavum, vel senio confectum,
sed maxime alienæ societatis, & gregis profugum, pro vehiculo pedibus
elevatis supinum, in terram dorsotenus sternunt: inter coxas, & crura ligna ordinant,
Castor supine tractus pondus portat. & componunt: & eum trahentes ad suas mansiunculas, a lignis exonerant: iterumque
exeunt, & redeunt, donec institutæ domunculæ fuerint elaboratæ, situ scilicet
bicamerali, vel tricamerali, vt corpus ab aquis emineat, atque cauda in eis quiescat:
Domus tricameralis. quæ, vt pedes posteriores, pro piscibus in escis habetur. Est enim cauda instar piscium
squamosa, coriaria, tum densitate suffulta, atque nodis latentibus mire distincta, delicatissimam
Esca delicatissima. præbens escam, atque medicinam iis, qui sauciis intestinis elanguent. Nec
periti coci eius præparationem ignorant, sive pro cibo, sive pro medica refocillatione
Dentes acutissimi. sit præparanda. Dentes habet acutissimos, vt arbores juxta flumina,
quasi ferrea novacula cædat: quin & hominis, venatoris præsertim,
parte comprehensa, non ante, quam fracta concrepuerint
ossa, morsu resolvit.
