CAP. XXIII.

Taxus.                                         EST igitur taxus animal agreste, magnitudine vulpis, licet
                                        staturæ humilioris: quia tibias habet curvas, pilosque plures
                                        albos, quam nigros, præsertim in dorso, & in latere:
                                        caput in medio nigrum, & in lateribus album.
Mordax.                                         Pili eius duri sunt, & spissa pellis, ac fortis: dentes, acuti,
                                        ideoque mordax. Vnde a canibus, vel aliis bestiis molestatus,
Supin’ pugnat’                                        seipsum resupinat, & dentibus pedibusque repugnat,
                                        præcipue contra vulpes: a quibus haud aliis annis, quam
Genus taxoru duplex.                                         fœtido stercore e propriis ædibus abiguntur. Duplex eorum
genus est, domesticum videlicet, valde ludicrum: & sylvestre, rigidioribus
setis respersum. Dicitur etiam taxus caninus, quia in varia findit pedem, vt
canis: etiam porcinus, quia in duo findit vngulam, vti porcus, Videtur autor
libri de nat. rerum dicere, taxum habere crura brevia, nec in vtroque latere æqualia,
Astutis evadendi. sed in sinistro breviora: vnde fit, vt in vestigia rotæ, quæ attritione currus
faciunt, positis pedibus dextri lateris, valenter currat, sicque suos persecutores
effugiat. Verum hoc Alberto Magno non placet, cum multos viderit sine eo defectu:
egoque in Septentrionalibus terris nunquam eam pedum inæqualitatem vidi, nec
ab aliis visam audivi. Ibi etiam vulpibus sunt majores, pellem habentes villosam,
Pharetræ e taxorum pellibus. & setis rigidam, atque tenacem: de qua pharetras omnes & militares cooperiunt,
& venatores, vt sagittas a pluvia, & nivibus illæsas conservent. Fiunt
Vestitus. & vestes integræ habitus virilis, prout & e lupis, e hac pelle,
Morsus exitialis. contra frigora, & omnem casum nivium sufferendum. Morsus
eius fortissimus est, & exitialis, ac venenatus,
propter nimium vermium reptilium, scarabeorum,
& murium comestionem.
