LIBER XIX.        657

De Gallis.

CAP. XII.

GALLI etiam præcise in media nocte inchoant cantum, Galli media nocte canunt.
horisque (vt cunctis notum relinquitur ) interpolatis continuant
ad lucidum diem: eoque frequentius canunt, quo magis
diei successerit hora. Crisia plerunque consumitur gelu,
pendetque abscindenda, vt stupida caro, ex albedine turpis,
& pallida apparens. Tanta est Aquilonarium observantia
in gallorum nocturno cantu, vt nullum horologiumCantus gallorum certior horologio.
eligatur rectius in noctium progressione, vel distinctione.
Sciunt etiam gallum facile sentire auræ mutationes,
e motu solis contingentes: cumque canit, se erigit, & alis percutit veluti nuntius
(vt beato Ambrosio placet ) vigilans, ad laborem solicitans dormientes: idque
jucundius auditur in pagis, cavatisque montibus vicinis, vbi echo per ventum duplicat
cantum: quo audito, tempestivius transitur ad opus. Veteri etiam observantia
receptum est, & adhuc servatur, vt post gallicinium noctis, securiores a phantasmatibus, Viatores ante galli cantum non exeunt ædes.
dæmoniisque nocturnis, quam antea, sint viatores. Ideoque prima c???a est
novis inquilinis, ædes ingredientibus habitandas, vt rubei coloris potius habeant
gallos, quam alterius: (nam fere omnes candidi sunt ) quia cæteris omnibus perhibentur
sagaciores. Canente gallo, latro fugatur, peregrinus & hospes solatur, &Gallus adest fœminis perituris.
ægris incommodum alleviatur. Parientibus ergo fœminis, summaque ægritudine
laborantibus, gallus non longe abest, ob felix omen, & temporis lapsum indicandum,
vt probat Volater. lib. XXV: quos & dicit strepitu suo
bellum, & faustam partubus nativitatem annuntiare. Vtque tandem ad
mensam convivantium meliores, crassioresque offerantur, juniperi
baccis, seu leguminibus, in toto AquiloneGalli saginantur juniperi baccis.
abundantibus, sicuti & aliæ sylvestres volucres,
saginantur: vt elegantiores, sanioresque
carnes eorum reddantur.
