                                        IN Septentrionali Gothia & Suetia grad. eleva. poli Arctici
Ciconiæ nigræ.                                         56. in Meridionali situ, versus 90. gradum procedendo,
                                        solummodo ciconiæ rubeo rostro & pedibus, sed pennis nigris
                                        inveniuntur, verno tempore a calidis regionibus, aut ab
                                        vastis et abditis paludibus, mitiori cœlo subjectis, vbi hyeme
                                        latuerant, revertentes. Advenæ nocturno volatu cum
Pulli in paludibus producuntur.                                         gruibus veniunt, veteraque domicilia repetunt, eo scilicet
                                        naturæ instinctu, quod potius in paludibus, quam hominum
Esca ciconiarum.                                         domibus nidos, pullos producturæ ponant. Aves
etenim hæ plus aquatiles sunt, quam terrestres: vnde & lumbricis, ranis, muribus,
piscibus, & carnibus, ac serpentibus vescuntur: sed bufonibus nunquam. Animal ad
pastum conquisitum rostro comminuit, glutitque, ac in struma retinet, donec moliificatum
mittat ad stomachum: vnde reiicit ad pullos enutriendos. Hæc avis nigra
Ciconia pro pullis pugnat. est, fortissimi rostri: acerrime pro nido & pullis, etiam ad mortem vsque pugnat, alam
vnam ante crus, quasi pro scuto opponens. Aquilas, & cæteras rapaces aves tempore
pullorum insequitur: quas si sola exturbare, aut superare nequierit, alias convocat,
Signum victoriæ in sono rostri. victoriam parem e hostibus habituras: quo obtenta, rostri percussione alacritatem
ostendit: etiam quando socia accesserit, vel pulli prosperantur in pastu: tuncque
diu sonat, caput ante & retro sæpius plicando Nocturno autem concussa timore
sonat, & sibilat, auxilium in noxias bestias petitura. Præterea vnum e pullis, vel
quia degener est, vel quia tædio pascendi ducitur, deplumatum nido dejicit, vulgi
judicio velut decimas pendens, aut domino fundi censum pro hospitio præbens.
Pietas eximia erga filios. Eximia tamen illis circa filios est pietas. Nam adeo nidos impense fovent, vt assiduo
incubitu plumas exuant. Quantum autem tempus impenderunt in fœtibus
educandis, tantum & ipsæ invicem aluntur a pullis: nam frigida earum membra refoventes,
eas in pastu procurant, donec redierit fortior ala ad parentum senectutem
nutriendam. Tradit & Volateranus, & Aelianus, eas teste Alexandro Magno,
ob pietatem deorum beneficio in quibusdam Oceani insulis in homines converti:
quare eis nocere, omnibus locis ducitur impium, & indignum, maxime in
Thessalia,
